Overview
The GSK Opportunity Scholarship offers renewable financial support to residents of the North Carolina Triangle (Chatham, Durham, Orange, and Wake counties) who have faced adversity but show strong motivation to advance through higher education or training. Awards are intended to help students who demonstrate the ability to succeed when given support.
Award Details and Approved Uses
- Total support may reach up to $20,000 per recipient.
- Payments are disbursed annually for up to four years, with awards of up to $5,000 each year (renewable for up to three additional years after the initial award).
- Funds may be applied to any expense listed in the institution’s total cost of attendance. Recipients are responsible for any remaining charges not covered by the scholarship.
- Continued funding requires that recipients remain in good academic standing and provide semester progress reports as requested.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Residency in one of these counties: Chatham, Durham, Orange, or Wake.
- No restrictions based on the high school attended.
- Must be attending or planning to attend a public college or university in North Carolina. Any degree program is acceptable.

This scholarship is available through the Triangle Community Foundation’s universal online application system. When you log in, an eligibility quiz will gather basic information and display all scholarships for which you qualify, along with their specific application questions. To be considered for the GSK Opportunity Scholarship you must submit both the universal application and the scholarship-specific questions.
