Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship

Scholarship Sponsored by Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)

Value: $5,000.00
Awards Available: 4
Deadline : Apr 30, 2026

Intro and purpose
The AIST Judith A. Quinn — Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship recognizes and supports motivated students who intend to pursue careers in the iron and steel industry. Administered by the AIST Detroit Member Chapter, the scholarship welcomes applications from high school seniors (entering college) and undergraduate students; applicants may reapply annually.

History
In 2013 the Detroit Member Chapter scholarship was renamed to honor Judith A. Quinn, a trailblazer for women in the Detroit-area steel industry. Ms. Quinn served as Secretary-Treasurer for the AISE Detroit District Section in 1985 and 1998 and was the AIST Detroit Member Chapter secretary from 2004 through 2013.

Award amounts and distribution
Each year up to four scholarships are offered: two awards of US$2,500 and two awards of US$5,000. The final number of scholarships granted may vary depending on the applicant pool. Awards are intended for students from the AIST Detroit Member Chapter area who meet the eligibility requirements. If no suitable applicants are available in engineering or metallurgy, scholarships may be awarded to qualified students in other majors closely related to iron and steel production.

Eligibility
- The scholarship is open annually to a child or grandchild of an AIST Detroit Member Chapter member who has been in good standing for at least two consecutive years.
- Applicants should be high school seniors planning to begin college in the fall or current undergraduate students enrolled full-time.
- Major: engineering, metallurgy, or materials science at an accredited North American university (other closely related majors may be considered when engineering/metallurgy applicants are not available).
- Academic minimum: cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicants must demonstrate an interest in, or intent to pursue, a career in the iron and steel industry.
- Awards are made without consideration of financial need.

Selection process
Applications are evaluated by the Scholarship Award Committee, which is composed of the Chair, the Secretary, and up to four additional members from the Detroit Member Chapter.

Conditions and disbursement
- Scholarship funds must be used at an accredited college or university.
- The recipient must be starting or continuing studies during the fall semester of the year the scholarship is awarded.
- The AIST Foundation will send the scholarship payment as a single lump sum to the recipient’s college or university for credit to the student’s account.
- If the student’s enrollment or admission is delayed or interrupted for any reason, the AIST Detroit Member Chapter Secretary must be notified immediately; delays may result in forfeiture of the award.
- Students are eligible to reapply each year while pursuing their college education.
