His involvement with the Farmers Union and 4-H was significant, culminating in him receiving the Torchbearer award, the most prestigious honor bestowed upon young members of the Farmers Union. From 1976 to 2005, John served as an insurance agent for the Montana Farmers Union. In addition to his farming endeavors, John was a Vietnam veteran who was greatly respected and admired for his service to his country.
