Founders Scholarship

Introduction
The Betsy Y. Justus NC TECH Founders Scholarship was created to honor NC TECH’s founding CEO following her death in the summer of 2011. In accordance with her wishes, the scholarship funds support young women in North Carolina who plan to pursue studies and careers in technology or engineering. Each year NC TECH awards this scholarship to two recipients; each award includes an annual $1,000 stipend and a Lenovo laptop.
Award Value and Duration
- $1,000 per year, plus a Lenovo laptop
- Total award for students attending a four-year institution with a physical campus in North Carolina: $4,000 (over four years)
- Total award for students attending a two-year NC Community College: $2,000 (over two years)
- Enrollment will be verified each year before funds are disbursed to the school.
Important Dates
- Application opens: January
- Application deadline: April 15 (submissions accepted through this date)
- Applicants notified of awards by: May 1
Who May Apply (Eligibility)
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Identify as female and be a rising undergraduate (freshman, re-entry, or transfer) preparing to enroll at an accredited institution of higher education in North Carolina
- Qualify for North Carolina resident tuition status
- Be planning to attend either a four-year college/university with a physical campus located in North Carolina or a two-year institution within the NC Community College System
- Have an unweighted cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Intend to major in a technology- or engineering-related field
Application Requirements
All materials must be submitted as described below:
- Completed online application including essay responses
- Proof of acceptance: Documentation that you are accepted as a rising freshman, re-entry, or transfer student at an accredited NC institution (upload within the application)
- Official transcript: Your current or most recent school must send your transcript directly to jana@nctech.org. In the email subject line include: Scholarship Transcript: Applicant Last Name, Applicant First Name so it can be matched to your application.
- Letter of recommendation: A faculty member, academic advisor, or community leader must email a recommendation directly to Jana Barile at jana@nctech.org. In the email subject line include: Scholarship Transcript: Applicant Last Name, Applicant First Name to ensure it pairs with your application.
