In 2022, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the NCAPA initiated the Trailblazer Scholarship. This financial aid opportunity aims to assist Black/African American students in their second year of PA education. The committee's decision was influenced by studies and data indicating health disparities and the lack of representation. With a $1,000 award, the scholarship seeks to address these issues. The Trailblazer Scholarship is specifically designed for second-year PA students in North Carolina who identify themselves as Black/African American.
Criteria for Eligibility:
- Applicants must be of African American or Black heritage and enrolled in a North Carolina PA program.
- As of August 2025, candidates must be entering or already enrolled in their clinical year.
- Applications should be submitted on or before July 1, 2025.
The following are the evaluation criteria for the scholarship:
- Evidence of plans to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in the future. This includes:
- Strategies to bring diversity into the profession
- Plans to address healthcare disparities
- The applicant's financial necessity (self-reported)
- Past or present contributions of the applicant to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- A statement from the PA program attesting to the student's good academic performance
