In 2022, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the NCAPA initiated the Trailblazer Scholarship. This financial aid opportunity aims to assist Black/African American students in their second year of PA education. The committee's decision was influenced by studies and data indicating health disparities and the lack of representation. With a $1,000 award, the scholarship seeks to address these issues. The Trailblazer Scholarship is specifically designed for second-year PA students in North Carolina who identify themselves as Black/African American.

Criteria for Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be of African American or Black heritage and enrolled in a North Carolina PA program.
  2. As of August 2025, candidates must be entering or already enrolled in their clinical year.
  3. Applications should be submitted on or before July 1, 2025.

The following are the evaluation criteria for the scholarship:

  • Evidence of plans to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in the future. This includes:
    • Strategies to bring diversity into the profession
    • Plans to address healthcare disparities
  • The applicant's financial necessity (self-reported)
  • Past or present contributions of the applicant to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • A statement from the PA program attesting to the student's good academic performance
