In 2005, the General Assembly established the North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (ELS) with the aim of providing financial aid to deserving North Carolina residents who are enrolled in eligible higher education institutions within the state.
Qualification Criteria
- Applicants must be North Carolina residents for tuition purposes
- They must be enrolled in a curriculum program for a minimum of six credit hours per semester
- They must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards set by the institution
- They must be accepted, enrolled, and classified as undergraduate students in a degree, certificate, or diploma program at an eligible North Carolina institution (including UNC campuses and North Carolina Community College campuses)
- They must meet the criteria for the Federal Pell Grant (excluding the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) range used for Federal Pell Grant awards)
Additional Details
Once the FAFSA is submitted, applicants are automatically considered for the scholarship. The FAFSA becomes available on October 1. It is recommended that applicants adhere to the priority deadlines set by their respective institutions. Late applications may not be considered if funds are limited.
Eligibility is determined based on a need-based calculation, using information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
