This scholarship is intended to financially assist college or university students who are preparing for careers as secondary school mathematics teachers (grades 7–12).

Tax information
Scholarship proceeds may be taxable or non-taxable under IRS rules. Recipients are responsible for reporting any taxable portion and for paying any related taxes. For guidance, see IRS Publication 970, “Tax Benefits for Education,” or consult a tax advisor.

Eligibility
- Applicants should be completing their sophomore year of college and plan to enroll full-time at a four- or five-year college or university in the coming academic year with the goal of becoming a certified 7–12 secondary mathematics teacher. Applicants may alternatively be enrolled full-time in a graduate program specifically to obtain 7–12 mathematics teacher certification.
- Minimum cumulative college GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
- An individual may not hold more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust during the same academic year.
- Not eligible: previous recipients of the Texas Instruments Demana-Waits Scholarship, employees or immediate family members of employees of the Educational and Productivity Solutions business segment of Texas Instruments, and employees or immediate family members of employees of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Proposal requirements
Applications must include documentation demonstrating:
- Academic achievement at the college/university level and a clear commitment to a career teaching secondary school mathematics.
- A plan showing the remaining two or three years of collegiate coursework in mathematics or mathematics education required for certification. Provide a detailed, full-time study schedule that would satisfy those requirements within three years of study.
- Course titles and credit amounts for mathematics and mathematics education courses already completed.
- A budget outlining how the applicant will finance the proposed plan.

Timeline
Coursework and graduation are expected to be completed within two to three years.
